We’re going to have some basic ‘How Tos’ at our next mtg, like how to put a connector on a piece of coax; which connector type to use, and how the intended freq affects it. (i. e. You can do anything on HF, but when you get up to 440 Mc and want to go longer than 10 ft, you probably ought to use the good stuff, and maybe even go for the type ‘N’ connectors). Mike KI5YX likes the ‘Clamp’ connectors that have rubber grommets and are fairly water tight. He will do a demo.
We’ll also go over some basic soldering techniques like, tinning the iron (with silver solder bc it melts at a slightly higher temp), and keeping it clean. Also, how to avoid spending multi dollars on a new tip by fashioning one for your gun out of #12 wire. Each attendee will receive a length of Silver Solder.
Additional questions answered (by someone who’s been there); How to replace a Geranium transistor with silicon; How to replace a small trimmer capacitor Using A Variable Resistor and small fixed cap, plus finding substitutes for a Zener Diode by using either a couple regular diodes or an LED. Time and place of the mtg is in previous article. Speling variations and misteaks above are international.
Trivia Q: Was it a Hammarlund or Hallicrafters 400 Tx that announced the Pearl Harbor attack on HF.
